Puppy Socialisation

Puppy socialisation - we are told so often how important it is; we must get our pups out and about and meet as many people/things/places as possible before the magic 16 weeks. Now, don't get me wrong, I absolutely agree that socialisation is an essential part of rearing a puppy, however, I also believe that a lot of the time, people go about it completely the wrong way.  There are a few different takes on socialisation that I have seen:

1) Get the pup out there to see as many things as possible, whether they like it or not, so long as we can tick the list

Why manners matter

This blog is republished with permission of the original author - a very good read!

The other day my partner and I were taking a walk through the woods when, on the far side of a clearing, we spotted another couple. We both immediately rushed over, waving our hands in the air and shouting at the top of our voices. One of the strangers was busy checking text messages and the other was watching a squirrel in a nearby tree so both were quite startled by our sudden arrival. The one checking his texts was quite grumpy about it and actually swore at us.

Dogs and Hot Weather

We are currently experiencing some lovely warm weather and I realise that there are many warnings doing the rounds on facebook and other social networking sights about the dangers for dogs in hot weather, but I make no apology for repeating them, especially as I continue to see, on a daily basis, owners putting their dogs through misery, generally due to their lack of knowledge. So, here goes:

DON'T walk your dog at the hottest part of the day - get up early and take them out, or wait until it has cooled right down on an evening

IMPORTANT NEW CHANGES TO DDA LAW

There are some important changes being made to the Dangerous Dogs Act, which will affect all dog owners - please take the time to read the following link so that you are prepared

Dogs in Need of Space

There are many reasons why a dog may need more space - they may be frightened, have a history of being attacked by other dogs, old, ill or in training.  Please remember that it is NEVER polite to allow your dog to go bounding up to other dogs, particularly those on leads.  Many dogs that are fine off lead can be reactive when they are on the lead. Dogs that are aggressive with other dogs, still need exercise, and you will usually find that their owners do their best to keep them away from other dogs.  If a dog is aggressive, the more it gets to 'practise' that aggression, the worse the dog will get.  So, if you see a dog on lead, please always ask before allowing your dog to approach and if you see them wearing a yellow ribbon on their lead, or a yellow jacket, with a logo as above, then they ARE dogs that do not appreciate other dogs being near them, so please, please, put your dog on a lead and give them a wide berth.

Choosing a Puppy

One of the most fabulous things about dogs is that they come in all different shapes, sizes, colours and temperaments, so you would think that choosing the correct one would be easy wouldn't you?  So why do so many dogs end up with behavioural problems, or in rescue kennels?  Often, the problem is due to a mis-match of dog to lifestyle.  A puppy is a huge commitment - in terms of time and money; Purchase price, equipment,  food, vaccinations, worming, flea treatment, insurance, vet's bills, cost of kennels or pet sitter when you are on holiday.

Welcome to my blog!

Keep checking back for helpful advice and articles about caring for and training dogs.  I intend to include advice if you are buying a new puppy, or taking on an older dog.  Maybe you are taking on a rescue dog and just want a bit of help with settling them in. I am also hoping to include information on nutrition, health and welfare as well.
